What are the applications of these Free Shell Accounts?
What do people usually use them for?
To access Linux features from Windows computers?
Here are some reasons I can think of:
people want to run Linux programs while they use another OS
most of these sites offer webspace or email services with a nice domain name
some people like collecting things like accounts
It is true that much of this can be accomplished with your own computer, but:
people may not have the time or skill or desire to maintain a server,
of their own that is secure on the public Internet
people may not have good bandwidth on their Internet connection
or they cannot afford to keep it online or their ISPs may block incoming services
maybe you want to access Internet resources from or tunnel your Internet connections
through an IP address that is not your own, for some reason
